Eh, Steve!
20 August 2007 @ 02:02 pm
So, it's been over two weeks since I first phoned MDG about the Xbox360 dying, and just four days ago they told me I could bring it in for an exchange. The catch is that the old unit has to get shipped out before they'll ship in the replacement. Today I brought in the old unit, and I was given an invoice which will allow me to pick up the new unit when it comes in. I'm hoping it comes by friday or saturday, otherwise I'm not off work to pick it up until wednesday. When I finally brought this computer in to get it fixed, they got it taken care of right away, and it hasn't been a problem since, but I wish they weren't such a pain in the ass for products they can't service. Still, from what I gathered, this is more expedient than getting Microsoft to service the Xbox, although if the next one's faulty I think I just might send it to them right off the bat so as to guarantee myself a working product.

Jenn and I just got a shiny new computer from MDG, part of the appeal of the package for me was that it came with an Xbox 360. Last wednesday I picked up the computer, the Xbox came in on thursday. When we first got the computer home, it didn't work. No light, no fan, nothing. Later that night we got it to turn on, and it was good for six days. Then, it spontaneously decided to go back to acting like it had no power again, but at least I could play on the Xbox. Yesterday morning I packed up the tower and took it on the bus to MDG, where the technician got it working again, and so far it's working okay, but I want to wait for at least a week of use before I throw out the packaging.

Today Jenn and I bought a Dance Dance Revolution pad and game for her, and a plug and play kit for me, to go with the Xbox 360. I came home, started playing a demo I had downloaded from Xbox live, and it froze half way through. I waited for a bit, turned it off, and when I turned it on again I got an error message, and now instead of turning on, I get three flashing red lights on the front of the machine. Apparently, this is a common thing on the Xbox 360, seeing as this exact problem has it's own section on the support page at the official web site. I've already sent off an email, so now I just have to wait for a response.

Ya know, when I buy electronics from anywhere but Radio Shack, I expect them to last significantly longer than a week. I'm beginning to wonder about this MDG place.

Dear Pizza Hut,

I've just had a very disappointing experience with your McBride Boulevard location in New Westminster BC, through your online ordering service today, reference number AR04804X72T1516. I placed my order online at about 1:15pm, and according to your website the delivery estimate was half an hour from that point. My wife and I did dishes in the kitchen immediately after, which in our suite places us right beside the only door in and gives us a view out of our kitchen window, which we were both facing the whole time, that allows us to see anyone who enters our stairwell. At 2:00pm, our pizza had still not arrived, and I waited untill about 2:15 to phone in to find out what was going on. I was put through to the store, where I was told that the driver had been by twice with no answer. I'm sure he went SOMEWHERE twice, but as I said, we were standing beside the only door to our suite, watching the stairwell the entire time, and absolutely no-one came to our door. The person who I spoke to repeated all the information that I had given on the website, that I live in a basement suite, and that the entrance is around the back, all of which was correct, so I know there was no error on my part. The person offered zero compensation for the mistake that was made, and told me I would have to place my order again, and that I would then have to wait half an hour for it to arrive. Unfortunately, I had used an online only coupon which gave a discount on first-time orders, and since I already placed the order I can't use it again, even though I never recieved my order.

I understand that mistakes are bound to happen from time to time, and I'm usually pretty easy going about mixups, late orders, or drivers who are having trouble finding the place (which has only happened twice before), but not receiving the order at all and being told to start over is a new one, and without a little something more than a simple apology it is completely unacceptable to me. I usually order from the mom and pop place around the corner, and I ordered from Pizza Hut to try something different. Rest assured, the experience was different, and I'll stick to my more reliable, local, independant operator in the future.

Thank you for your time,
-Stephen Brown

16 May 2006 @ 12:50 pm
I decided a while back to sell some things on eBay. I waited for them to offer their "list 5 items for free" promo, and put up some of my old treasure from my parent's place. Turns out it's not worth very much at all. I think that part of the problem is shipping, people would ask me for a quote and then they wouldn't bid when they got it. In the end, I'm rather disappointed, but it's kind of fun to pack things up to send off around the globe. I don't think I'll do it again, though, garage sales, free listings and swap meets are the way to go.

On the plus side, What money I've made is good for a couple things. Jenn and I found this really cool online costume store, and bought ourselves some faux-leather costume boots. I got some black cavalry type boots I can use for the pirate outfit Jenn's going to sew for me, or a Jedi costume at some later indeterminate time. I've also placed an order for the last of the locally unobtainable Star Wars Lego sets, and once I have those there will be only one set I'm missing (not counting the other not yet released one), which is readily available from the Lego website. Oh, so close, I can't wait to be finished.

On the down side, I just got a letter from the Canada Revenue Agency. They've reasessed my 2002 return, and rejected all of my expense claims from when I worked as a diver, meaning I now owe them more money than I care to admit in my LJ. To be honest, I've been worried this might happen, I heard different things from different sources about what I could or couldn't claim, but at least it's only a reasessment, because in my more paranoid hours I imagined being hurled away for decades on fraud charges (stupid overactive imagination...). This has come at an unfortunate time though, as Jenn and I are still recovering from an oversight earlier this month when we went nuts at Ikea. The closest there is to a silver lining here is that I can pay the difference between that and this year's return, which will take out nearly a quarter of it, and the rest will fit on the line of credit. It's not really good, but at least I can manage it. On the other hand, I just talked to Fido, and my contract is up so I switched to another plan which should cut down my cellular bill by two thirds. Once Jenn's contract is up and we get her switched, we should be doing pretty good.

Things like this overwhelm me and make me anxious, but there's nothing I can do except to keep doing what I'm already doing. Keep putting money in the RRSP, keep taking bites out of debt, use a moderate amount of willpower to avoid overspending (sometimes), and over time things will get better.

It's kind of funny, the number of TV shows that make me want to start up roleplaying games. It more or less began with the 60's Spiderman cartoons inspiring my Toon Supers game, which only lasted one session. I've been meaning to start it up again, I have NPC's and a couple plots all set to go, I just haven't made the time to schedule a session. Perhaps when The Tick comes out this August I'll find inspiration again.

Samurai Jack and He-Man also inspire me to start GURPS games, the appeal being that absolutely anything can exist in those settings, allowing both the PC's and the storyteller to be wildly imaginative. The problem is that I seem to be alone in my reverence for these shows.

The most recent show to inspire me is Firefly. I would definitely want a copy of GURPS Space to flesh it out. The only thing is that I would want to set that game in the same universe, but a different solar system. One which resembled early Canadian history, instead of American history. This would make a significant change to the setting, of course, considering Canada's lack of both civil war and romanticized outlaws. This just means I'll need to make other analogies. Here's what I envision. Read more... )

There are a couple of problems with this game. First, I have nothing for story ideas. The setting I can flesh out easily enough, but it's useless without plots. Second, I already have a game that I never play that's very similar to what I've described: Blue Planet. Last, but possibly foremost, there is no way I cant get people to commit to a regular game (including myself). A drop in game would work, but I have no idea how to set it up in this setting. Also, GURPS Vorkosigan should be coming out sometime this decade, and that's what I really want. That, or to play something, but I can only justify gaming every fourth saturday or so, and most storytellers seem to want to get together weekly.

Ahem. I appear to be whining about a lack of gaming again. Well, all I really wanted was to share my Canadian Firefly idea.

I've just spent the last half hour or so greasing up my bike because the weather looked nice. I used WD-40 to strip most of the old grease off the chain, then applied new grease. I oiled all the pivot points on the brake system. I even took apart and cleaned my tire pump and greased its o-ring with vegetable oil, and now it works like new again. Just as I finished getting my tires nice and firm, rain started to fall. I was going to ride my bike up to the Try & Save to pick up a few groceries, but now I won't. Instead I'm thinking I'll transit somewhere else and see if I can buy a new zipper pull for my coat. I don't normally complain about the rain, I am aware that it's a part of living in the Fraser Valley, but this is annoying. Jenn told me that this January has broken every rain record we have, and it doesn't look like it's ready to let up yet. All I can say is we'd better not have a drought this summer, or by gum I'll complain again.

I've just finished watching the federal election coverage on CBC. All week they've been talking about following it with the Rick Mercer Report, Air Farce, and This Hour Has 22 Minutes. I stayed up late to catch these shows, and was once again struck with the curse of British Columbia (late timezones ="We won't show you that stuff we talked about"). At least I'm not paying for tv. As for the election, I'm disappointed the Conservatives won, but at least they have an even lower minority than the one they're replacing. I'm glad the NDP got more seats, and I'm glad they beat out the Conservatives in my riding, even though they're not who I voted for (that won't be revealed, due to paranoia of flaming trolls...) I'm hoping the Conservatives will be more flexible this time, but only time will tell how well this group can get along. I did like Paul Martin as the nation's leader, and I feel kind of sad for him that he feels the need to step down as leader of the Liberals, but it does seem like a smart move to let in some new blood, and perhaps make sure there's no lingering animosity between the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition. To that end, I think it would be great if Belinda Stronach made it to leader of the Liberals, so that we can send her and Stephen Harper to Mustafar to duke it out if things get too intense in the house of commons, although it would be a shame if she fell in the lava and had to wear pressurized black armour, as she is unusually hot for a politician. While I'm being so serious, I also think that the independant shock-jock radio host from Quebec should be made Speaker.

The thing that really got me was those stupid inflatable partisan sausages that everyone was waving around and clapping together at party headquarters. Except the NDP headquarters, where they waved orange towels like it was a hockey game. Seriously, who makes those and how much do they cost? All the MPs should be made to keep their sausages and have pool noodle fights in the House of Commons, except Jack Layton and his wife, who will be giving everyone rat-tails.

In the end, there are only three things that I'm specifically hoping for from this government. First, that gay marriage will continue to be allowed. Second, that the Kelowna Agreement doesn't get scrapped. Third, that the tax cuts and increased spending don't get out of hand and wind up eating more money than is in the surplus. Aside from that, I'm perfectly content to be a couch potato and trust the judgement of our elected officials, maintaining a secondhand, loose scrutiny on their activities.

So what's up with those old people walking around with white canes? The white cane has been the universal signal meaning "I am blind" since the forties or so (if old WB cartoons are anything to go by), so it's not like it's some kind of new-fangled fad they've never heard of. At first I always assume they're blind, but then I see them looking around and not feeling the ground with their stick. Well, even blind people don't use the stick all the time. And maybe they're just turning their head to follow a noise. But today I saw an old guy with a white cane CHECK THE TIME BY LOOKING AT HIS WATCH! Last time I checked, watch technology wasn't so far advanced that blind people could see the time. Some people say that with age comes wisdom, and I believe that it's true if a given individual is attentive, open-minded, and has a little mass between the ears. Aside from that, I really don't think that getting older improves the average unthinking, functionally-illiterate doofus.

On the other hand, maybe I'm the one who's out of touch and blind people are now using flourescent orange canes, and white ones are trendy for people who aren't blind? Hmmm... let's do a google image search for "blind cane"...

Nope, still white. Maybe it's popular because it's folding?

The accident is officially dealt with. (Providing of course that the other person doesn't challenge ICBC's ruling.) Despite the fact that over a year's worth of payments had been made on the car, it still cost us about $3,000 more than what ICBC gave us to pay out the loan in full. I did make sure that ICBC gave us fair market value for the car, but apparently the person we took over the loan from was shafted by the dealership, either that or it's natural for a 2000 Ford Focus ZX3 to devalue by about $5,000 in a little over a year (June 2004 to October 2005). I made an appointment to see the only person who manages loans at the JW Auto Group for 3:00. I showed up at 2:50, she was out untill 3:52. It was just as well that I spent over an hour sitting and waiting (and they didn't even have the usual assortment of shitty magazines I've come to expect in that situation) because when I did get to see her I had to stand behind her in her cubicle because there were no chairs and no room for a seat anyway. Actually working out dollar amounts and handing over cheques was less than 10 minutes, it would have been nice if I had been able to do it earlier. Coming up with the money was tough, but I was able to do it, although it unfortunately meant our line of credit is maxed out again (although it has a much lower interest rate, so that's slightly better), as well as using up the cash Jenn got for her birthday. On the other hand, spending that money now means it will be free later to pay off Jenn's DVDs when Amazon gets them in three to five weeks, so it's all the same in the end.

After that, it was smooth sailing. Minimal waits for the busses, went to the insurance place and cancelled the insurance, and since I had the claim number I was able to back date it, so ICBC is sending us another cheque for $147 (the other one being a refund of 75% of the deductable, since I was only 25% at fault), and there will be no payment for insurance coming out on thursday, which helps a lot with making sure our cheque for the loan payment won't bounce.

Then it was on to groceries. Nearly everything I got was on sale, and I completely forgot that today was Welfare Tuesday, so I got an additional 10% off for being ugly and wearing sweat pants, so all told over $60 worth of groceries was around $45. Jenn and I bought me a new backpack yesterday, as the old one had a strap broken off. I really didn't want one with the layers of vertical compartments, but that was my only option between about 6 different stores, so I got the best one I could. I now believe that my backpack is awesome, the outer verticle layers kept my umbrella upright and my transit schedules flat, and the main compartment easily held 8 Chef Boyardee cans, a 4L jug of milk, a 1kg box of frozen chicken strips, a regular sized styrofoam tray of beef, a small block of cheese, 200g of mushrooms and five packets of sandwich meat. And it was still comfortable.

About five minutes after I got home the landlord showed up to collect rent, which I had exact change for from the shop (also a plus), then I polished off some leftovers and had a beer for dinner, and now theres lots of candy (zero goblins last night), He-Man, and dismantling the Halowe'en Lego waiting for me. In other words, life is alright.

I don't think I ever want to take a loan out on a vehicle again, though. A car is considered to be an asset, but I've never found them to be anything but a liability, what with repairs and the barracudas you have to buy the cars from in the first place. In fact, I think I won't have a problem living without a car for as long as I can. The only reason I can think of to need a car again would be when Jenn and I want children, but I'm thinking that won't be for a while. Even then, I think I'll go for a lease rather than owning.

Space has been randomly disappearing from our hard drive. For a while, Jenn and I would continuously delete files and programs, only to have more space disappear. Jenn was looking for zip files one day, and she found a whole bunch listed in c:/Uploads, except we couldn't find c:/Uploads. We tried unhiding hidden folders, but that revealed nothing. The annoying thing was if you added up the size of all the folders in c: (Windows, Documents and Programs being the main contributors, as can be expected), we were missing over 3Gb. Today I was looking at the Folder Options, and saw a box under view that hid protected operating system files, so I turned it off to look at those files and see how much space they were taking up. Low and behold, once the settings were applied there was c:/Uploads, taking up 3.9Gb. I opened it up, and some stuff looked like it might be operating system files, like winxpbak4.zip, and others which really didn't look necessary, like banana_explosion.zip. There were all sorts of zips with names of obvious game programs which I've never installed and haven't heard Jenn talk about. The funny thing was that most of them were the same size, about 754k or something like that. I decided to take a chance and delete the entire contents. The computer made no complaints, like it usually does when you try to remove important stuff. I defragged the hard drive and restarted the computer, running disc check, and everything was hunky dory, which to me suggests that everything I deleted was unnecessary. I've rebooted twice now, and each time a few hundred files were added to c:/Uploads, and I've deleted them all, so whatever is putting files there is still doing it, but now I know how to keep it in check.

Anybody have any ideas what the heck is going on?

I used to think that my hobbies were Lego and gaming. I'm beginning to think that I only have one hobby now, and that's house work. The games I want to play aren't being played, the games that are keep getting postponed (or they're larps, which have absolutely no appeal to me), and as for Lego, I got 172 of the 183 missing pieces for the last designer set I bought, and I placed an order for the last 11 two days ago and the seller has yet to give me a shipping total, and when he finally does I have to wait for them to come in the mail. After that I'm going to build the main model, and then I can sort the pieces away. Once I've done that I'll be free to start building the project I've been wanting to start for over a year now, although that will require a larger working space, unless I want to move the coffee table and sprawl all over the living room floor, which is filthy, which means... more house work! You see, I get bored on my days off, and in my boredom I can't help but notice how dirty this apartment is, and since I'm not doing anything else I tidy up a little. I can't tidy up too much, because that requires vacuuming, and if one room mate isn't asleep the other is. So I settle for doing laundry, doing dishes, scooping out the litter box, taking out the garbage... all that fun stuff. I also piddle around on the internet, but there's only so much you can do there. I'm usually on messenger, and lots of my contacts are there, but they're away, or just want to shoot the shit without actually doing anything, which makes it difficult to clean stuff. In other words, I'm bored. I miss my Xbox (I think I've said that before), which is kind of shameful because all it's good for is pissing your life away. But I'm not doing anything more constructive at the moment, so if I'm going to piss my life away, I may as well do it in a way that entertains me. My first impulse is to say I should learn something, but really, what's the point of doing that? I mean, if you expand your horizons, then you have expanded horizons. What exactly does that do, besides give you the ability to act superior to other people and say "look at me, my horizons are bigger than yours"? Besides, there's only one thing that I can think of that I'd like to learn, and that's to play the accordion. But where would I practice? Not here, where there's people trying to sleep on my days off, and certainly not in public where people don't want to hear accordions being played by people who already know how, let alone by people who are trying to teach themselves (that's right, I want to get one of those "teach yourself how to play" books and go nuts). It's more of a pipe dream, really, accordians cost money and I've got other junk to spend money on. Besides, there are other creative outlets I should be persuing. I have a webcam and some stop-motion software to go with it, I could do that. I have all sorts of Lego I could randomly build stuff with, just to practice for that project I want to start. I have a digital camera and a tripod, I could go to friendship park and try to learn how to take nice pictures of stuff. Except that I don't really want to do any of that right now, besides I want to start cooking dinner in an hour and a half (although all I have to do for that is boil some spaghetti, thanks to the slow cooker. Yeah, cooking is something I do besides cleaning.) If I could leave my Lego out for a couple days, rather than having to set up the containers and then sort them away every time I want to build something, it would be easier, but the problem with that is I don't want the cat to get into it, and it wouldn't be fair to clutter up the living room for the other two people here. Once Jenn and I are on our own it won't be so bad, because she won't need to have the living room uncluttered before she goes to work, so I'll be able to pull out all my Lego and leave it out on my days off. Also, the amount of time I spend cleaning will be reduced, because I'll only be cleaning up after two people, as opposed to three people and a cat. Furthermore, I'll be able to spend time brewing my own beer, and barbecueing my own pork and brisket, which I have all the equiptment for, I just need space. Okay, so I'll be able to do stuff when Jenn and I move out, but what do I do for now? Just try to be patient, I guess. Only five months more at the most, but if I luck out (which I sincerely doubtI will) it could be shorter.

Eh, Steve!
08 April 2005 @ 11:16 am
So last sunday Jenn and I watched the entire extended widescreen Lord of the Rings trilogy. We started at 5pm, and ended around 8am. It would have taken less time if we had watched it the whole way through without interruption, but we paced ourselves by stopping to eat dinner (meatball stroganoff, made in our new slow cooker, and it was incredible), walking up to Timmy Ho's for coffee, that kind of thing. Now, after that and the Mr. Bean marathon for my batchelor party, I am approximately turned off of marathons for a while. Although doing the Star Wars marathon around episode 3 might intrigue me enough to be involved in that.

Also, I've been having trouble with Jedi Knight 2. I wasn't able to change the action that the joystick on my game pad controls, which I should be able to do, so I emailed tech support, and they gave me some solutions that didn't work. I had a similar problem last summer with Taz: Wanted for the Xbox, and like last time, the solution was that the manual was missing some key information. In this instance, you can't reassign the joystick's function directly for some reason, you have to set the x and y axis to work as buttons in the preferences, and then reassign the funcions of the arrow keys on the keyboard, and then the joystick will do whatever the arrow keys are supposed to do. This is not intuitive in my opinion. The really annoying thing is that my dual Joystick controller doesn't work with Jedi Knight 2 in analog mode, which makes it difficult to do small movements. This is aggravated by the fact that the original Jedi Knight didn't have this problem, and worked beautifully with my dual joystick controller, despite the fact that dual joystick controllers didn't exist then. Not to mention the fact that this game undoubtedly works in analog mode with a dual joystick controller if you play it on the Xbox or PS2. I miss my Xbox again, but I have other things to spend money on. Like the Episode 3 collection of Lego sets, which only costs CDN$400, including a 10% discount for buying it all at once. I think I'll wait for Lego's next "free shipping on orders over X" deal.

Just opened my Rebel Blockade Runner to discover that three stickers had come off the sheet and stuck to the box and instructions (the instructions are also badly dog-eared and ripped in one corner). The box was sealed, though, so I can't hold it against the seller. It's too late to phone Ontario today, I'll have to do that before work tomorrow. Fortunately, all of the stickers are right at the surface, so I can build the set now and put the stickers on once I get a replacement sheet.

Well, the power is out in my room. And the bathroom (both of 'em), as well as half the kitchen (but not the fridge or stove). I'm bored and I want to play my Xbox, but I can't. The manager was informed yesterday and said she'd be up in a bit, which I took to mean sometime that day. So now it's saturday, and I'm not sure if there are electricians who work saturdays, or if the assistant manager won't call because they charge more. I've read the Tenant's Agreement Act, and this does seem to qualify as an emergency repair, so maybe if we haven't heard anything by tomorrow we'll just call an electrician ourselves. So here I am, bored. Hey, look what I found! This is both ingenious and disturbing, not that that combination appeals to the majority of the people I know.

I'm not ashamed to be straight. It's part of who I am, and I feel no reason to hide it. I guess that means that I have straight pride. I saw this site, and it's mostly just a place where "Straight Pride" t-shirts and stuff are sold. I thought it was kind of cute. Then I discovered that the message was primarily one of opposition to gay marriage. What the hell does gay marriage have to do with being proud of my heterosexuality? The annoying thing is that if I went looking for white pride on the internet, I'd probably find all sorts of supremacist crap there too. I want to email these people and point out that you don't have to be down on someone else to be proud of who you are, but they're probably inundated with that sort of thing already, given that the "Hate Mail" section of their site is offline. I mean, homophobia vs. freedom of speech is one thing, but these people are giving me a bad name. Here's a thought: how about all us straight folk buy some of these shirts, take pictures of us wearing them beside some people in other pride shirts with rainbow flags, maybe throw on some of those "We love and support our gay and lesbian friends" pins, and bombard these jokers with high resolution pictures (as per their request) thus glutting their inboxes?

Eh, Steve!

Monday was St David's day, the day of my first date with Jenn. We walked around the sea wall, and we've done that every year since. This year it was really windy, so we cut across Stanley Park by Beaver Lake. We went to the Games People in gastown, where I got the UCS X-wing, and then we hit Margaritas for dinner. A good day. Then we went to Xcalibur for some bowling and it sucked. The lanes kept going down, the people beside us were lofting all night, and they were blasting the Beat. So I won't be going back.

Today I bought new work pants, as well as a safety vest, and cut the greens. Yay.

My stuff still hasn't come in the mail. I was supposed to take the bus home, but the bus came way early and I missed it, so I paid for a cab. I have to work again tomorrow. I have a killer headache, but I don't know if it's from dehydration, carbon monoxide, sleep deprivation, or voodoo. On the other hand, I had half a bottle of Maudite and uploaded this stupid picture of myself. I wish I had more hands to have other stuff on, I might have something cool happen that way.
